Uke choices of the professionals - pt1

As amateur players you probably beat yourself up enough over which ukulele to choose to play (or, like me, to play next!). I suppose it's the same for the pro's too, but have you wondered what ukuleles the professional players choose to play? Check out this first selection.

Jake Shimabukuro

jake shimabukuro

Whilst Jake may have other ukes in his collection, he started playing ukulele as a child on a Kamaka uke and is said to have played them ever since. Today if you see him play he will most likely be performing on a beautiful custom built Tenor model, made specially for him.

James Hill

James is known to play many ukes, and chooses what he wants depending on the voice he needs for a particular track. If you have seen his online videos of him performing tracks like Billie Jean he is playing that on a custom uke from G String.

Eddie Vedder

I had to mention Eddie - whilst not most famous for being a ukulele player, he certainly hit the headlines and shook the uke world up last year with the release of his Ukulele Songs LP. Eddie has reported in interviews that he plays many types of uke, but on the record he is most famously associated with playing custom models from his friends at De Vine guitars.

Amanda Palmer

Another player who divides opinions, but Amanda has become completely linked to the ukulele, releasing EP's and other tracks played on it. She has been seen in city centres playing impromptu live jams on the ukulele on a range of cheap Mahalo type ukes, or playing the one above which was a gift from her father (it's a Hilo). Interestingly, whilst in her punk tradition she claims that quality and tuning don't matter too much, it would appear that Ms Palmer recognises that a bit of tuning and intonation are kinda important - playing live recently she has been spotted with a Pono model!

I hope to revisit this theme soon on Got A Ukulele with a roundup of some other famous players 'ukes of choice'.

Ukulele Anthem cover gets the attention of AFP!

I love this story!  Over on Ukulele Underground, one of the forum regulars, CountryMouse alerted us to the fact that she put up a cover of the Amanda Palmer track 'Ukulele Anthem' on YouTube. Nothing unusual in that, but Amanda Palmer herself spots it and Tweets it to her HALF A MILLION fans on Twitter!

I think it's so cool, and would urge you to click LIKE and check out her other videos too!

Amanda Palmer - Lua on ukulele

Regular readers of Got A Ukulele will know that I have a "thing" for Amanda Palmer, and in particular her love of the ukulele.

Therefore thrilled with this song choice (Lua, by Bright Eyes) and a superbly atmospheric video too. Bliss.

Creep - Ukulele Chords - Radiohead

The massively popular Creep by Radiohead is also deceptively simple on ukulele.

The chords below are in line with the recording, but personally I prefer to play in a different key as on the ukulele I think the transitions sound more resonant and "sadder".  If you want to play my way, just replace the repeating chord progression with C, E7, F, Fm. In fact that is the way you will hear me play it on all my ukulele review videos!

CREEP - Radiohead

When you were here [G] before
Couldn't look you in the [B] eye
You look like an [C] angel
Your skin makes me [Cm] cry

You float like a [G] feather
In the beautiful [B] world
I wish I was [C] special
You're so very [Cm] special

CHORUS
But I'm a creep [G]
I'm a wierdo [B]
What the hell am I doing here [C]
I don't belong here [Cm]

I don't care if it [G] hurts
I wanna have control [B]
I wanna perfect [C] body
I want a perfect [Cm] soul

I want you to [G] notice
When I'm not [B] around
You're so very [C] special
I wish I was [Cm] special

CHORUS

She's running [G]out the
door [B]
She's [C] running out, she
Run [Cm] run, run, run

Run[G]
Run [B]
Run [C]
[Cm]

Whatever makes you [G] happy
Whatever you [B] want
You're so very [C] special
Wish I was [Cm] special

CHORUS
then end with

I don't bel [G] ong here

Enjoy!

Its been an Amanda Palmer couple of days..

Well, I suppose I had to go with one more - another Amanda Palmer ukulele video.

This one is quite haunting and taken from her Ukulele EP.

Im just a big fan of people doing things slightly different with the uke, and Amanda is certainly a different than normal face on the little axe.  Just love this.

Amanda Palmer and Stephin Merritt on Ukulele

Many thanks to Shelley Rickey for alerting me to this ukulele video via Twitter.

Amanda Palmer and Stephin Merritt play ukuleles on the Late Show performing Science Fiction / Double Feature from the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Ably supported by Moby on guitar and Neil Gaiman on toy piano.  Whats not to like?

Oh, and if you want the chords -

GF
Michael Rennie was ill the day the Earth stood still
EbD
But he told us where we stand
(same chords)
And Flash Gordon was there in silver underwear
Claud Raines was the invisible man
Then something went wrong for Fay Wray and King Kong
They got caught in a celluloid jam
Then at a deadly pace it came from outer space
And this is how the message ran
CDGEm
Science fiction double feature
(same chords)
Doctor X will build a creature
See androids fighting Brad and Janet
Anne Francis stars in Forbidden Planet
CDGEmGEm
Oh, at the late night double feature picture show.

I knew Leo G. Carrol was over a barrel
When Tarantula took to the hills
And I really got hot when I saw Jeanet Scott
Fight a triffid that spits poison and kills
Dana Andrews said prunes, gave him the runes
And passing them used lots of skill
But when worlds collide, said George Powell to his bride
I'm gonna give you some terrible thrills, like a
Science fiction double feature
Doctor X will build a creature
See androids fighting Brad and Janet
Anne Francis stars in Forbidden Planet
Oh, at the late night double feature picture show
I wanna go
Oh, to the late night double feature picture show
By RKO
Oh, at the late night double feature picture show
In the back row
Oh, at the late night double feature picture show.

Science Fiction double feature
Frank has built and lost his creature
Darkness has conquered Brad and Janet
The servants gone to a distant planet
Oh, at the late night double feature picture show
I wanna go
Oh, to the late night double feature picture show.

Cool! Amanda Palmer news

Amanda Palmer covers Radiohead ... on the ukulele

Fans of the Dresden Dolls, Thom Yorke and George Formby – this is your lucky day
Amanda Palmer, American punk rock singer

Now she is free of her record labelAmanda Palmer is doing what any ambitious artist would do, given the opportunity to record any project whatsoever: she is releasing an EP of Radiohead covers. The Dresden Doll will interpret "simple" Radiohead tunes ... on her ukulele.
Although Palmer has been hinting at the record for a while, she finally confirmed the release in an email to fans this week. It didn't take much reading between the lines. "I'm going to unveil my NEW ALBUM PROJECT," she wrote, "which *might* be an EP, and it *might* be an EP of Radiohead songs, and I *might* be playing those Radiohead songs on a magical instrument like, oh, a little ukulele."
Though Palmer is presently touring with Evelyn Evelyn, she has found time for Radiohead sessions in the studio, on stage, and in front of her webcam. Live ukulele versions of Creep and Exit Music (For a Film) have already appeared on YouTube, and Thom Yorke will be pleased to discover that someone has recorded an even more maudlin rendition ofFake Plastic Trees.
In earlier posts about Radiohead covers, Palmer made her intentions clear. "I [just] recorded five Radiohead songs on ukulele for heavy-duty shits and giggles," she wrote in March. Elsewhere, they were "sad little [tunes]" used as procrastination tools. "A Radiohead ukulele cover album might just have to be what I do to Shed The Past and Find God," she wrote in February. "Some people ACTUALLY find God and record Christian albums. I just find Radiohead." Later that month she solicitedsong suggestions from fans, warning them the Radiohead tunes must be "simple" and "singable". Whereas Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, Phil Selway et al are unbridled in their approach to recording, Palmer sought tracks that wouldn't need "Radiohead production fanciness" and which "only have four to six chords, tops".
The as yet unnamed, er, ukuladiohead album will be released in July.

Evelyn Evelyn - Love Will Tear Us Apart & Chords

Further to my earlier post re this brilliant album - you gotta listen to this!!

http://evelynevelyn.bandcamp.com/track/love-will-tear-us-apart

Chords are very very simple (though not the easiest chords to play) - PROVIDED FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY!

It is basically a repeat all the way through of Em (0432), D (2220) Bm (4222) A (2100)

When routine bites hard
And ambitions are low
And resentment rides high
And emotions won't grow
And we're changing our ways, taking different roads
Love, love will tears us apart again

Why is the bedroom so cold?
You've turned away on your side
Is my timing that flawed?
Have our feelings run dry?
Yet there's still this appeal we've kept through our lives
Love, love will tear us apart again

You cry out in your sleep
All my failings exposed
There's a taste in my mouth
As desperation takes hold
Just that something so good, just can't function no more

Love, love will tear us apart again

Evelyn Evelyn

not often you get some new alternative music out there that shouts out to the uke - but you may want to check out the new album "Evelyn Evelyn"- basically put together by the wonderful Amanda Palmer (Dresden Dolls) and Jason Webley.

Brilliant album, great concept - and you gotta love that version of Love Will Tear Us Apart at the end - on Ukulele!
